Allright , a lotta good wins week 2 . not so much week 3
Playoff races are starting to take shape . looks like 1400 and the Deuce are cementing their places at the top of their divisions .
Week 2 wins by : c-killer , Zorn( more on this later) , BHM , Paul , Twenty , AVE , Gads , dpm , and farb . And some draws which were key in securing some needed GP/MP .
Due to a family emergency , we lost Twenty for the rest of the T . We hope things get resolved in a positive manner , and that he'll be available for T43 ...
Congrats to Zorn , for receiving the League Game of the Week honors ! a nailbiting game ; tempo is paramount for success in Kings' Gambit . and the game was a testament for following ur "battle plan" even when it looks like ur defense is shredded and falling down around you . Even when you have to sac 2 pieces! to get the alley u want to exploit . However , in going over it , I saw another line to take , which might have helped it not be so nailbiting . what if , on move 8( it's the 3rd game in Zorn's history , if u want to play along) you take the N - Qxd4 - rather than Bxf4 . Now i see the problem with 8...p-b6 9 ...B-c5 because u lose Q , but before then u would've gone Qxh8 . and the N is out of ur face , which was causing some of the nailbiting . as I see it Black has only 3 responses for Qxd4 ; N-f6 Q-f6 pxg2 . if N-f6 then Rxf3-pawn outta ur grill and pawn on f4 going next . if Q-f6 then trade and again Rxf3 . if pxg2 ( prob best move) it's still nailbiting , but u could actually use his own pawn as a defense from the Q-R threat Black would like to use on g-column. a forced response of 9. R-f2! still leaves Black trying to save his R . Which means Bxf4 is still viable , and your overall goal of opening up f-column for a Morphy-like mate also is good - without sac-ing White B . So , starting from 8 , Qxd4 pxg2 R-f2 N-f6 Bxf4 R-g8 B-e5 ! ... seems to put black in dire straights . Can't move the N because of Bxf7+ , can't defend it with just R or B ,and doesn't have time to set up ...p-b6 ...B-c5 . best sequence is ..B-e7 Bxf6 R-g6 Bxe7 Q-e7 . stopping the f7+ . but now there's no answer for N-d5 ! and you have Q-h8+ anytime u want it . you've always got a mate threat on black and he has no time to take advantage of the a7-g1 diag or his pawn on g2 . Now if Qxd4 pxg2 R-f2 Q-f6 Qxf6 Nxf6 then Rxg2 . don't worry about the fpawn if he pushes it ; it won't Q with B and the aR(once u move black B) defending. no pawn on g2 means u can bring the aR to f , and the f7+ is still in play. R-g3 solves the pawn pressure ; if B-d6 then Rxg3 ... Basically , if Q and d4N and that g2 pawn are off the board u can't be mated ( with a R on f , N can't move), and your attack still works . not trying to be critical ; just seems like this sequence leaves u with less drama , and more pieces - even trades , while still sticking to the "plan" .... After all , in the real game sequence , it ends up 5 Black pieces against 3 for White . If he doesn't blunder the b7 pawn on move 26 or his N two moves ltr , maybe u can't double the Rs and threaten the White B , or stop his new attack on g2 ... If Black doesn't play my sequence right , you could win in under 20 moves ....
Week 3 wins for : Dan , alaska ( good tactics in both) , cysk , Guo( 1st League and STC win !!) , Sneaky , Paul and Zorn(2 in a row for both) A bad "STC Sunday" for us tho ; 12 games played only 2 wins still 5 teams with a decent shot at the playoffs ...
the STC Game of the Week :
Round 2 : chesskilleruk vs easycure - ck's 1st STC win ! The opening gives White solid control of the middle ; Black's unwillingness to trade Bs for Ns costs him a R ; then a R-for-N sac weakens the rest of his defense ...
Round 3 : Paulkov vs matein7 - Black appears to have regained the pawn he lost on move 2 , but now the way is open for White's d-pawn push . Once B takes the f6N , the way to the back rank is clear . Black must make many forced moves , that aren't in its favor ...
This is a little late Round 4 news shortly( 4 games still left ) but i think the headline will be " Blow up your Formulas " (before u play ur League game ...
